Uniting and Volunteering: Impacting Literacy

I once dreamed of positively and significantly impacting literacy rates in the Caribbean and perhaps even the world. Now, however, although I currently volunteer in a Jamaica Foundation for Lifelong Learning program, I feel like I could do more and better... and I will. Seeing the video below only encouraged me to revisit  my aims and create objectives that will get me there.

Although most Caribbean countries currently have fairly decent literacy rates for a developing region (of around of above 80%, except for Haiti which has been estimated well below that percentage)  millions of people in the Caribbean are illiterate. Unfortunately, too many people are ignorant of the literacy crisis in the world.  One look at the Literacy Rate in the World Map had me confused as to how inaccurate some parts of the map is when compared to other available statistics. I won't even get into the definition of literacy. I'll discuss that after more research.

Sure, I had lofty dreams when sometimes all it takes is a lot of people who care to make a difference, uniting to make a change. Please watch the video below to find out how Open Books, a literacy program in Chicago, is making such a difference.
